Karana and Tutok meet several days in a row. Zia follows the titular heroine, the year-old niece of Karana, as she sets forth on a sea-faring quest to find her long-lost aunt. O'Dell's version of this story left out the missionaries, but maintained the slaughter by trappers and the tribe's abandonment of the island.
Around it, blue dolphins swim, otters play, and sea elephants and sea birds abound. Though Karana is wary and suspicious of the girl, whose name is Tutok, the two eventually become close friends.
Later, the "replacement chief" Chief Kimki leaves the island on a canoe for new land in the East. But just seven weeks into her stay, Maria passed away.
This is a really lovely story and recommend this uplifting book for all ages! Hers is not only an unusual adventure of survival, but also a tale of natural beauty and personal discovery.
There, she finds out that the ship that had taken her people away had sunk, before it could return from the mainland for her.
Though others on the boat try to restrain her, Karana jumps into the water and swims back to the island. The main concern is the move could damage these precious artifacts between the risks of travel and a drier climate that could make them brittle.

Instead of killing him, she takes him home and nurses him back to health. Also foolish as a cricket when he was excited. Her rescuers see that her dress made of cormorant feathers is not appropriate for the mainland and they have a dress made for her.
After her long stay on the Island of the Blue Dolphins, another ship comes to her harbor. So the something O'Dell looked to the legends and customs of other tribes of the Channel Islands, then carefully described tools like the pitch-lined baskets used to haul water.
